Homelessness Mediation

Alliance Mediation Management Limited works with families to enable them to live together in harmony or to be able to support each other in their desire to live apart.

It is not unusual for families to experience periods of conflict and a breakdown in communication, especially between young people and their parents. Although this may not be unusual if the conflict or breakdown in communication is not addressed in a managed way, the effects can be devastating.

Some of the key causes of family conflict/breakdown that can lead to homelessness include:

• Step parent/families

• Alcohol / Drug Issues

• Emotional/physical/sexual/mental abuse

Mediation is mindful of the Southwark Judgement and although remaining at home is not an option for young people who are suffering abuse, young people generally have improved life-chances the longer they stay at with family and therefore mediation is an excellent homeless prevention tool.  

Homelessness family mediation focuses on relationships and communication, and seeks both long and short term solutions. This can include improved relationships and communication, fewer arguments, increased self esteem and a greater willingness to accept responsibility for actions and behaviours.

Good early mediation intervention contributes to much more than just homelessness prevention. It could help a young person stay in education, training or employment, reduce offending and antisocial behaviour and have a long term, positive effect on the parenting skills of the parents so that similar crises can be avoided with younger siblings.
